Jerome,
The inheritance tax seems to be in need of reform(raise threshholds and protect family business), not repeal. It's not fair to tax the income of the living multiple times(federal, city, state, sales, fica, medicare etc.) on the same dollar, nor is the death tax fair. With that as a given, it is better policy to tax multimillionaires at death than to tax at the high marginal rates we now have for the living in all brackets. On this thread some have placed almost a religious tint on the repeal of the death tax. The death tax is just one of many sources of revenue. We shouldn't get any more hung up on it than other taxes. I am for the death tax as long as it begins $1 above what I have accumulated at the end of my life. This assumes that I will have something left after the Bear is finished with me. Mike

Jerome,

You get taxed for what you use and not taxed for what you don't use. What could be fairer?

If you check out late from a Hotel you will be charged a little more.

If You return a rental car or a movie late a little extra is added to the charges.

There is one enormous flaw in your logic used in your premise. You are assuming that one has the ability and/or responsibility to return the car on time or to check out of the hotel on time. Death is an event of nature; should we also have an orgasm tax? Or how about a belch tax? These are also natural events yet the very thought of a belch tax is ludicrous. In fact it is no more ludicrous than the current death tax.
