Honest govts., honest citizenry, and sound money lead to sustainable economic advance. Why? People can trust in the system. Hitler was the result of Weimar inflation - prices had to be enforced at the point of the bayonet. The endless debasing of currency by corrupt regimes has been proven disastrous by the court of history. There is no counter argument.

Keynsianism is an admirable attempt to smooth the business cycle. It is stressed to the limit, however, when politicians, CB's, investment bankers, and citizens attempt to "game the system" for personal gain. What you seem to be arguing is that CB's and politicians have the prescience to be able to counteract disastrous decisions made by lenders. Unfortunately, there are times (financial bubbles) when all participate in folly, thus removing any and all checks.

I think the sooner bad debts are discovered and expunged the better. Unfortunately they are allowed to go on and on and on, thus prolonging pain. I fear only pain of individual and corporate bankruptcy will make individual and companies realize their folly. I am sorry, Haim, the individual who takes on three mortgages, buys 3 SUV's on credit, and maxes out 7 credit cards to the tune of $50,000 and who only make $30,000 should be punished, so should the fools who lent him the money. In short, people should not be allowed to live beyond their means, indefinitely. This is magical, "new paradigm" thinking, and ultimately leads to what you seem to fear the most - The Strong Man on a Pale Horse

I wish the Kingdom of Heaven would descend onto the earth, and no one would have to toil for their bread ever again. Alas, another millenium has come and gone and the glorious event has not yet come to pass.
