rampant consumerism
Robert,
World economy is based on rampant consumerism, trade deficit and national debt of the US. Excesses in these need to be prevented for sure, but they are what drive the world economy. Jacob is against unbalanced budgets at all times. Brian is against rampant consumerism. Jerome wants to tax us all to death. They are not exactly acting in their own self interest as nasdaq investors. mike

Bob,

If it weren't for the rampant consumerism of Americans, wouldn't the market for Applied's products be drastically reduced?

The short answer to your question is Yes, but then it would be Yes for practically every company, tech or non-tech. One only "needs" only so many gadgets; the same could be said for food, candy, cars, etc.

FWIW, I see no large-scale trend which would bring us less consumerismn in this country, except by those who feel they do not want to be part of the mad capitalist free-for-all grab bag. I add myself to this category:-)
