<You certainly have a different take on the case than has been reported in the papers. It became a cause celebre because the Judge took the child, who is black, away from the foster parents, who are white, in part BECAUSE the child was black, and the Judge thought it was in the best interests of the child to be raised among other black people so the child would retain his identity. >

LOL, the child never left the foster parents as far as I know... if that mother {biological} had ever gotten the child back it would have been almost impossible to remove him again. Where did you hear that?

<. I was very surprised to see that the kid got taken away from Mom and given back to the foster parents. >

Exactly... never happens.

<She blew it by testing positive for cocaine and not abiding by the rules. >

Never heard the cocaine part... all the press reports I've ever read states that she's been clean for like 3 years... so she went through the whole DCSF process and the courts fighting for her child {if you've looked at data on these cases the parents usually just give up, very rare for a mother to REALLY want her child and not end up with it} and was clean the WHOLE TIME.

Where did you get your info... I was living in Chicago the whole time and followed the whole thing. Reasons for not giving the child back ranged from the things I presented to statements like "she should stay away from the press and just be a mother" by various powers involved. All in the Tribune. As for the judge, my understanding was that it went back and forth several times and there were lots of things beyond here control. Illinios has the toughest child laws in the county, once DCSF gets involved, your in... if you don't kiss ass to DCSF and JPA your toast, judges aren't going to go against recommendations because if god forbid another incidence occurs her A^& is Grass. If [very rare] the person actually has money to get into the situation of the 'battling psychiatrists' THEN you can win.
