Paul,

I think the EDS types are also up here in the 51st state.

As for IBM muscling in on the consulting firms... I would would have to say that is not something new as IBM Global Services is still ranked as one of - if not the largest - consulting services and sytems integration services firms in the world. Remember - a 1/3 of IBM's approximately 300,000 employees are in IBM Global Services.

The problem is that they are usually torn between slogging their many mediocre products into solutions for business and working with competing products to their system division's product lines. Novell's eDirectory would be one of them against SecureWay.

The other part - and I have said it a few times here - most of IBM thinks Novell has long since gone the way of disco. What IBMers dont realize is that Disco is reviving lately.

You are correct that Novell has to make it known that eDirectory is the most scalable and open industry directory in the industry. I think that with Microsoft's AD shooting itself in the foot, Novell should really be focusing its Directory battle with iPlanet! Smart organizations who want to install a directory for more than a simple and small login technology will quickly drop Microsoft's AD from their serious contender list.

BUT, when they start looking seriously at Directories, they will place iPlanet against eDirectory - not because of its product strength against eDirectory but because of Sun's "Internet" cult status. "Afterall, if I want a Directory technology that can not only be scalable to the size of my organization - but to the size of the Internet - then who else but Sun - right???" - "What does Novell know about the Internet or the scalability that is required to deliver to it - they are a propriatary network protocol driven NOS company right???"

That is the naive paradigm that Novell must fight! I am living this argument for real at the large financial services client I am contracted with now!! I am finally convinced them that Microsoft's AD just wont cut it for their multi-platform / multi-company organization. So what did they start leaning towards? iPlanet! Not because iPlanet is better than eDirectory - but they are perceived to exist in the computing industry and iPlanet is not associated to a company struggling to prove to the industry it still exists.

Sorry to the few Novell employees that still read this board for the cold comments. These are are the perceptions that Novell must still fight against. Even though I dont have the influence with selling Novell solutions that I once use to - I am still trying to push a great set of products to my client base.

Cheers!
