Re: Communist East Germany - it's fascinating to learn that you grew up there. It must have been quite a transition once the country was re-united.

In the early 70's I went on a business trip to West Germany, and I remember taking a train that passed near the East German Border. There were a couple of sights that stood out in my memory: one was an observation tower with an oval cross-section, with the top half peeking over the top of a hill. Very sinister looking. Another was a rectangular section of East Germany that jutted into the West. It consisted of a farm field with a single farm house in the middle. By this time it was dark, and the thing that was remarkable about it was that the farm house and the entire field was bathed in very bright light. It was a chilling sight, which spoke volumes.

My visit to West Berlin was also memorable. Aside from the fact that seemingly everyone there spoke English, I was especially struck by the fact that the West Berlin subway passed underneath East Berlin. I have often wondered if the stops in East Berlin were active, and if so, how they were policed.
