I love to dig into life stories. Off the top of my head, if the grandmother is taking care of the baby/child there is a very strong clue as to what is going on there. Some women, especially those who have been indoctrinated with the woman's role as catholics have, and having always defined themselves as mothers, now with an empty nest have trouble establishing a new identity, and whether knowingly or not usurp the role of mother of their children's children, with a double payoff. Why would the girl choose to get paid low wages to work in a yardage store, when she could go to school and do something she likes??
