It's very frustrating for the political correctness of terminology to be so unstable. <<I'm listening to the radio and a whatever woman says she doesn't want to be called black or African American.>>

I just attended a short program on racial identity. It was facilitated by a black man. (I asked him if he was related to James Earl Jones on account of his beautiful voice.) We had about half "whites" in the room, but several of them said they thought they had Cherokee, Hawaiian, Filipino, and other bloodlines. Several of us were Tlingit, and there were several black people there.

The facilitator talked about racial "family." We watched a video about Thomas Jefferson's descendants from his wife and Sally Hemming. One of the latter faced ostracism from the rest of her family when she tried to explore her heritage. Her relatives had made the transition to the white world and didn't want to go back. But none of them could escape the genes that they got from Jefferson. The "white" side of the family had to cope with that.

A woman Coast Guard officer said she was missing the point because when she walked into the room, everybody could immediately see that she was black. Those of us with thin bloodlines blood could masquerade as white.

Bottom line: There is still a big disadvantage to being a minority race in this country. I think G.W. Bush can effectively deal with this much better than the alternatives like Al Gore or Clinton because he doesn't draw a distinction between people because of their race. The people who seek reparation or some kind of benefit based on low expectations are doing great harm.

Until we can all say "I'm an American!" with no thought to bloodlines, we'll have a problem. I'd rather be part of the solution like Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice. People like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are part of the problem.
