Or do you avoid killing even ants, spiders, cockroaches, etc. in your home?

Yes I do feel bad when killing vermin and will capture lost spiders and put them outside. Ants invasions I kill with environmentally low-impact materials I make myself to minimize collateral harm - but I don't like to. Plants do feel pain, IMO (yes the galvanic activity is measurable as metric of stress). Does that mean we should ignore it? No. I think we always work to minimize it. The native American notion of having respect for nature is closest to how I feel. When you kill the elk to feed your family, say a quiet prayer (an apology, if you will) to the spirit of the elk.

By our very existence we create suffering. It is a noble goal to minimize it or at least recognize it and have some humility that our own existence is dependent upon suffering in other life forms.

The amount of suffering in the world is great. There is no reason that we should become callous and generate more suffering.
