They are difficult situations to be in, to be sure. The question about your family, though, is unfair, since it is not the situation faced as a soldier in battle, and says nothing about questioning war as a means of settling disputes. More relevant is the general question: will you allow those without scruples to determine the future of the human race because you refuse to defend against them? This is especially important in a situation of ideological warfare, as opposed to dynastic strife or territorial aggrandizement. I considered myself a pacifist for a few years, and then, my junior year in college, I realized that I could not sustain it, that if it came down to letting Nazis or Stalinists win and shape the future, I would pick up a weapon and start shooting........
