Tony,

Compaq, IBM, Dell and HP have had 2 Intel CPU 1U servers for a year now.

They sell Intel based Dual 1U servers as well.

Someone tell these people about SCSI.

Don't forget that these are probably $1,000 units. SCSI would blow your budget and be the least bang for the buck component.

No ECC mentioned.

It says: ECC Capable Yes

Better bolt this baby down good so it doesn't take off. Highest fan to CPU ratio in history.

Some of these units have 2 single CPU or 2 dual CPU motherboards: racksaver.com
I don't think Compaq, IBM, Dell or HP have this.

Anyway, when you start counting fans:
Power supply: 1 or 2
CPU: 1 (or 2 for dual)
Northbridge: 1
Case: 1 - 3 is not unusual, especially in 1U cases, where the fans are small, and don't generate as much airflow as regular 80mm case fans.

Joe

Tony, A number of linux makers have made small size factor
1U or 1RU (rack unit?) for a while. They beat the Dells etc as they take a simple std case and add a mobo, floppy and a hard drive or three in internal bays here and there.
Heat is not as bad as you think as they often make a wider heat sink(no height) and have 6 rear fans drawing/blowing air through at a good clip. A lot of these small units have multiple fans for the HDD as well as the CPUs
Still this is good, it means more bits and pieces available.
They are prey to the std mobo memory, so not ECC.
Dell, CPQ will have purpose built, smaller footprint mobos with no risers. This uses a std mobo.

Tony, If you refer to the product matrix on thoe rack severs they do indeed offer various mobos, 4 of which are SCSI. racksaver.com
