I don't have a clue as to what you are talking about. Not using one's own name is a freedom to say something and not defend it publicly. handle use is based on fear or cowardice. As you say you see it as a risk. As an engineer I see the risk is trivial considering all ways that smart devious folks have at finding out all about you anyway. I believe that getting the respect of peers if far easier when one publishes in one's own name. You see I actually may understand all the layers of security that most foolishly believe protect them. Understanding technology allows one to know safe and sham.

I can understand the fear, and have no problem with people wanting to use surnames. I think they're fooling themselves if they think using a surname protects them though. People who really know how to use the net, and are motivated, can find out just about anything about a person regardless.

The CEO of SUN said it best during the controversy over Intel's chip design a couple of years ago. "There is no privacy on the internet, so get over it".
