Semiconductor Sales Slip 5.7 Pct in Jan.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Worldwide sales of semiconductors in January fell more than 5 percent from December amid lower demand for computers and other electronic devices, a trade group reported on Monday.

``The industry is currently experiencing lower sales due to an inventory overhang and deceleration in the end-equipment markets,'' George Scalise, president of the Semiconductor Industry Association, said in a release.

January sales of semiconductors fell 5.7 percent from December to $16.87 billion, according to the report. That was 13.7 percent high than January 2000, when sales were $14.84 billion.

Scalise said current forecasts suggest an adjustment in microchip inventories could be completed by the end of the third quarter, with demand for electronics picking up later in the year
