Japanese PC Sales in Second Week of February Fell in Volume, Value
March 5, 2001 (TOKYO) -- PC sales in the second week of February 2001 dropped by 5.7 percent in volume and 10.8 percent in value compared to the same week the previous year (Feb. 7-13, 2000).

The year-on-year drop in sales volume was the first in three years, or since March 1998.

According to the aggregate data of GfK Japan Ltd., an information service firm dealing with POS data collected from 3,200 volume retailers of household electric appliances, PC sales in the second week of February 2001 (Feb. 5-11, 2001) decreased by 3.8 percent in volume and 2.2 percent in value compared to the previous week. The average retail price rose by 3,029 yen from the previous week's 187,523 yen to 190,552 yen.

It is obvious that in March 1998, it showed a negative response to March 1997, when demand of PCs temporarily showed great increased prior to the raise of the consumption tax.

PC sales are showing sure signs of slowing down. The average retail prices for desktop PCs surpassed that of the same week in the previous year. Although the emergence of low-priced computers played a leading role for individual demand since the autumn of 1999, the lowering prices seem to have lost their appeal in stimulating demand.

Looking at sequential growth in the sales in value compared to the same second week of February in the preceeding year, the rate of decrease in desktop PCs has enlarged to 18.6 percent this year whereas that in notebook PCs turned to 5.1 percent decrease, both a break of the preceding year's figure. Consequently, even the aggregate of the both types of PCs showed a two digit decrease of 10.8 percent compared to the same week in the previous year.
