Trees produce chemicals from their growth (pines in particular). These chemicals saturate the soil and affect the germination of other plants and other pines. Their roots break up bed rock making it easier for other trees to follow. This are just two of the media in which their memory persists.

The rotifers also remember the tree, leaving an organic residue where they were. Their genetic information content in the population is roughly proportional to the longevity of the individual. Unsuccessful individuals are remembered by the collective gene pool if they leave any offspring. Those things that made them unsuccessful in one time may make them successful in another time, leading to speciation.

These are just a couple of examples. I could give more.
