Just a late night rant on a slight tangent to the subject. I tend to agree with Zeev's position. I happen to own ABX shares, and a small position in CEF, so I'm not anti-gold.

I see high gold prices as possibly not in the best interests of society, if it promotes activity with a lower marginal benefit than other alternatives. One example, drawing on your reply, the development of more efficient power infrastructure, that could reduce the amount of 'stored' energy required to be mined.

All I'm saying, is that gold served historically, may offer some insurance in the future, but has potential drawbacks as the primary backing of a global monetary system.
