Burt,

Thanks for the detail analysis. I agree with what you said. I was just referring to his lack of challenge to the Great Society programs of his predecessor, in fact somewhat eager implementation of it.

Your point on Nixon's lack of understanding of economics is right on target.

Joe

Burt - Re: 'It is fair to say that Nixon had a meager understanding of economics and relatively little interest, compared to the world of international politics and the world of party politics. He wasn't a closet democrat. He was an opportunist with a strong grasp of the realities and opportunities of international realpolitik as well as US domestic politics. History will be relatively kind to him on international matters (save Vietnam), and relatively unkind to him on his handling of the economy. His Watergate legacy will never be obliterated. The problem with Dick Nixon was that at the core he was "Tricky Dick" just as the problem with Clinton is that at the core he is "Slick Willie". Neither of these two ex-presidents was overly concerned with the niceties of the lawfulness of their activities or with the orthodoxy of their respective parties as far as policy decisions.
Nixon was an economic dunce before the nation began to realize that bad economic decisions had consequences that would hurt them down the road. Unusually good at wheeling and dealing on the international scene. Obsessed with winning elections at all costs on the domestic side. No discernable moral compass. "

Good synopsis of Richard Nixon.
