It is not necessarily the case that consciousness requires culture. What is clear is that we are a unique species in the character and quality of our mentation, which I thought was what was being debated.

A billion amoebas. Nope, they are not specialized enough. No synapses, for example.

Either nothing is important in the grand scheme of things, for the simple reason that there is no grand scheme of things, or it is important in the grand scheme of things, for the simple reason that it is a fact, and not a small one, with tremendous impact on the planet. If there is a grand scheme, surely a detail like that would not be accidental.
