Bush To Tap Egan for Ireland Post

By RON FOURNIER, AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush (news - web sites) has chosen Massachusetts high-tech mogul Richard J. Egan to be U.S. ambassador to Ireland, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Egan's nomination is expected to be announced after Egan clears final background checks and his candidacy is reviewed by the government of Ireland.

Egan, a major fund-raiser for Bush's presidential campaign, is head of EMC Corp., a computer storage company. He started the company in his garage and built it into a multibillion-dollar corporation. It was one of the biggest high-tech success stories in the country in recent years.

Egan, whose selection was first reported in Boston newspapers, has no diplomatic or political experience but is well known in Irish business and political circles, and is expected to be a popular choice in both nations.

Egan did not immediately return a message left Wednesday at his EMC office.

Through his successful Hopkinton-based company, Egan has played a highly active role promoting business investment in Ireland.

EMC Corp. operates a major manufacturing plant with hundreds of employees in Cork, most of whom make data storage devices for international customers. The company also has sales offices in Dublin and in Northern Ireland.

Jim Nicholson, former chairman of the Republican National Committee (news - web sites), was among the long list of candidates for the Ireland job. He is now a top candidate to be the ambassador to the Vatican.
