the dems badmouth the well to do far more than the repubs badmouth the poor.

Damn! I think you're right. And that's because the Dems will gain more votes from the left by doing so than the Reps would gain from the right.

Whipping up middle class resentments against welfare recipients is an old, old game. Remember Reagan's Cadillac Welfare Queen stories? But welfare benefits have been cut and the Federal entitlement is gone, so there's less mileage to get out of the story now.
