Hi J,

Perhaps it will finally be a stock pickers market

It's always a stock picker's market.<g> The VRTS and EMC reiterations today are important indicators of the underlying strength of the SAN foundation - Storage Management Software.

A year ago Steve Duplessie of the Enterprise Storage Group talking to an audience of Fibre Channel storage vendors pounded home the point that there could be no exploding SAN market without the software to make SANs useful. At the same conference, Veritas admitted that they and other software vendors had missed the boat on SAN virtualization software.

EMC's strength is their management software, the main reason they are number one in storage. It's easy to see why they remain strong. Veritas software services a market that is screaming for help with data backup, replication, and management. Both sell to a market that never diminishes and increasingly demands simplification along with their sophistication.

Veritas declared last year that they were in full scale fast track development of Virtual SAN software and expected to have a full-featured SAN package around the second half of 2001. Since then they have completed several modules.

As you know, Veritas has partnered with almost every storage vendor. If the underlying demand for storage management solutions remains strong, as VRTS and EMC report, the arrival of SAN solutions software will accelerate the adoption of SAN hardware.

Steve Duplessie a year was arguing that the FC storage hardware vendors were a tail wagging a nonexistent dog. Seeing how some of the FC companies are currently backed up on the SAN highway onramp, he might have been right.

Now it looks like the tail will finally have a dog to wag it.
