I do fear that most of these kids who commit crimes like this failed to develop a conscience, for whatever reason.

>>>internalize those standards and values, making them his own, and developing a conscience. <<<

They don't seem to make a connection between cause and effect, between action and reaction, between pulling the trigger and dying.

I never had the problem, but my Dad told me of a kid who played with matches. The kid's Dad got a box of matches and made the kid light the whole box one by one and let them burn down until they burned his fingers. Maybe these kids never have anything like that taught to them.

When I left my toys outside, they disappeared for a week or so. When I rode my bike around the school courtyard pegging rocks at the windows with my friend, the janitor came out and hollered "Stop!" I was caught; my friend got away. My Mom made me pay off the windows by working at chores around the yard; my friend's Mom said he meant no harm and there were no consequences. My friend joined the Marine Corps when he got old enough, but I'm told he spent time in the penitentiary after that. I've always wondered if that one incident was the reason why he didn't learn and I did.

>>>Many '90s experts don't understand this process. They focus only on self-esteem, not on esteem for other<<<

I agree with this statement. The esteem for others is lacking in two places: 1) in the kids who get so angry that they commit these crimes, and 2), in the kids who shun other kids or shut them out, thus setting the stage for the kids in the first group.
