I have read that that statistical fiction is about 2%. But the main point is that you are illustrating the common liberal assumption that the people are incompetent and that therefore the government must take care of them. This is nonsense.

Suppose instead of the current system, people were required to put a fixed percentage of income into a trust account that they could not touch until at least age 55. They themselves would manage the funds or hire someone to manage it.

How do you get from here to there? By phasing the new system in over a period of decades and continuing to fund te current system until it can be completely phased out.
