I simply have a strong belief that the right to defend myself and not having to depend on someone else is as fundamental as civil rights. My heart goes out to the two mothers and fathers who will not have their beloved child with them tonight, but my conviction about the right to bear arm remains unchanged. Mani, Yes, you are right....neo nazi is too strong a word and I apology to all those who belong to the NRA for using that word. However, until such time as we can come up with a system that effectively keeps guns out of the hands of the mentally disturbed or the would be criminal or our kids, I am opposed to any laws that permit so many guns in our society. There is good evidence that strong gun laws work and reduce the murder rate in a society. As one of the more developed/advanced nations of the world, I think its time we evolved to the next level. Citizens of gunless societies do not need to own guns because their societies are not violent. And as for our Constitution, I believe the right to bear arms was intended for a society that was primarily agricultural and isolated and undefended....and even then, guns were only meant to protect oneself from wild animals or Indian attacks, to hunt, or to defend this country. Two hundred fifty years later, we are a society that has become heavily urbanized with both paid police forces and paid military. Guns have become more a liability than an asset, and in my opinion, should only be available for receational hunting. ted
