just want to point out that although our current tax code is cumbersome, clunky, and full of special items and preferences; they most all have been put there to promote certain social outcomes. Like encourage home ownership, education, etc.

Not to mention Oil Depletion Allowance !!
and probably other subtle deductions that most people are not even aware of.
Do you know that you can trade stocks without paying any taxes?? You and I cant but ask someone who owns, say 10 million shares of MSFT and wants to diversify. He doesnt sell MSFT shares (probably got them for $0.01), pay taxes and buy others to diversify.

Any time you bring subjectivity into a decision, the people with the money and influence get the benefits. Ever hear of putting a rider on legislation ot allow it to pass?
