My upbringing seems to have been much like yours. We had lots of gun safety education in the school house. We had respect for lots of things, as you pointed out. One of those was for the safe handling and use of guns.

In highschool speech class we had to give a sales talk. I gave mine on my Ruana sheath knife, and it was one of the best speeches I gave the whole course. My classmates were even impressed. Today, like you said, <<We would all be expelled today for carrying a weapon. >> I would be arrested for carrying a weapon. I have loved my Ruana knife since I bought it with trapping money in 1956. I paid $10 for it then. I saw one going for $600 on eBay. But I wouldn't take a million. I understand some of the paranoia. My sister is a teacher. One of her sixth graders threatened to kill her. In minutes, he was in the custody of the principal. The next day police caught him on the street with a firearm. He doesn't go to school there anymore.
