I think a GeForce 2 MX is currently the first choice for very good 2D- and 3D-performance at a low price. You can get them for as low as $100 with 32 MB RAM. Personally I like the one from Asus very much (Asus V7100, also available with TV Out and DVI) but there are other good models as well. However, if you don't do any gaming or 3D applications I'd stay with the Matrox.
