PMC-Sierra Licenses MIPS’ 32-Bit Embedded Processor Technology
Electronic News
Mar 06, 2001 --- MIPS Technologies Inc. today announced a licensing deal with PMC-Sierra Inc. that will allow the Burnaby, British Columbia-based company to use its 32-bit embedded processor technology for networking applications.

MIPS (nasdaq: MIPS, MIPSB), a Mountain View, Calif.-based designer of processor architecture and cores, said the deal will broaden PMC-Sierra’s (nasdaq: PMCS) portfolio and allow the company to build industry standard processors.

“MIPS Technologies has the most widely adopted 32- and 64-bit architectures in the broadband networking infrastructure marketplace,” said Kevin Huscroft, PMC-Sierra’s vice president of research and development and chief technology officer, in a statement. “Licensing their 32-bit technology expands our product offerings for the access and core broadband infrastructure markets.”

Combined with MIPS’ 64-bit embedded processor cores, the deal will give PMC-Sierra more of the critical silicon needed for broadband networking infrastructure products as well as an open architecture microprocessor, the companies said.
