To: tejek who wrote (134170 ) 3/6/2001 3:52:47 PM From: JohnD Respond to of 1573718 Ted, The point I was trying to make was that legislation has not/will not solve societal problems. Examples; liquor - available, despite ever increasing laws, fines, prohibition, etc. cigarettes - same story, but matured into an excellent source of revenue for all levels of govt. gambling - similar situation. BTW, Massachusetts lottery sales=over $17. PER WEEK for every man, woman, and child guns - same story. New Glock or 22cal. long, no difference. If you cant buy or steal, you can rent~ "illegal"drugs - worst of all. Street drug prices are lower, despite 30 billion/yr. spent. We pay countries/growers to cut supply,as well. We also fill our prisons with millions of users and do almost nothing re. drug treatment, in prisons OR schools. I feel that any/all of the above are available to anyone regardless of legality - If they have the desire. Ask around, if you doubt me. Ask a cop, a teacher, or your children. - All of these "issues" have been/are being legislated constantly - with little/no, or reverse effects being reached, IMHO. Hiring more police, prison & border guards, inspectors, etc. has not solved/reduced the problems. It appears that we keep doing the same things over and over again, expecting a new completely different result. Isn't that one definition of insanity? BTW, there are other "social issues" we have tried to legislate out of existence, such as poverty - umpteen billions spent since the '60's, resulting in a greater % of children living below below the poverty level almost 40 years later. We obviously need societal changes. History seems to indicate that politicians, lawyers, and govt. apparently are incapable of bringing about these changes, and frequently may make the situation far worse. Decades of effort by our govt., and many hundreds of trillions of $ have been wasted to demonstrate this conclusion. I don't believe that any one person, party or group has the correct solution to our problems. I do believe that we can learn what has the least/worst chance of success from what we have been through up to this point~ JohnD-who feels that Columbine was sadly used as media hype by/for both political parties and ESPECIALLY the media. PS. I'm also tired of the subject :)
