No deal? Investors dump Amazon Shares plunge after report says there's no Wal-Mart deal

By Jennifer Waters, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 3:43 PM ET Mar 6, 2001

CHICAGO (CBS.MW) - Shares of Amazon.com Inc. plunged nearly 10 percent in a matter of minutes late Tuesday after the Wall Street Journal reported that a deal between the Internet retailer and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. was unlikely.

Citing unnamed sources, the report rebutted a London Sunday Times article that said an electronic-commerce alliance between the two was not likely to get done anytime soon. The Times said a deal would be completed in about six weeks.

Shares of Amazon (AMZN) rallied Monday and again early Tuesday on the potential of the world's largest selection of products teaming with the world's largest retailer.

They plunged, however, with rapid speed. In recent trading, shares were changing hands at $11.63, down $1 for the day. Wal-Mart shares (WMT) , which fell on the news Monday, were trading up recently by 79 cents to $49.16.

Nasdaq, or SEC should HALT trading in AMZN...,

until more information is supplied. Having AMZN traded without exact information but on pure hogwash is no service to the public.
