idler,

<< From what I understand, DoCoMo itself has developed a proprietary (non-standardized) form of WCDMA but there are significant problems with software. >>

You understand things differently than I do.

Their May 30 "launch" which is really a commercial trial, just like SKT's Oct. 1 launch was (and still is) a commercial trial, uses portions of the November 1999 draft of 3GPP UMTS 'R99'. Their fully commercialized launch will use the 'R99' standard, and all "regional variations" will be fully documented and incorporated in the standard.

That is my understanding.

I could of course be understanding this incorrectly.
