If the paint is that old, then it has solvents in it...
probably enough that it could pop a lid at some point...

Was the paint can right side up or do you store the
cans upside down??
(I store them upside down when I put them
on the shelf in the basement... to keep the air out and
keep them from getting a skin on top of the paint..).

BTW, the new solvent-less acrylic paints have a problem
with rust around the lid if you don't clean them up
really well after painting. I had noticed that, but it
didn't register why that was until I was talking to a
painter who said that it has to do with the low VOC levels...
