What better way to have the stock goes up than floatinf rumors about a strategic alliance with Wal-mart? Bezo would call Lee Scott and aske if Walmart is interested in working partnership with Amazon. In the mean time "the unnamed source" is an Amazon executive in London who leaked the "news" for an exclusive story. The paper was more than a willing participant. What better way to get an exposure in the US than writing about Amazon's giant step? Indeed Bezo did call Lee, and as a courtesy among CEOs, Scott took the call. It was not polite for Scott to immediately turn down Bezo's proposal, so that idea was in a limbo, even though Lee knew right away that Walmart was not interested. The above is a clever scenario: The London paper is not exactly wrong: There was a "talk" between Bezo and Scott even if that was just a call from Bezo. Walmart spokeperson had to issue "no comment" since denying the rumor means denying there was no talk between the two CEOs. Naturally, Amazon issued no comment as well, since the idea was to give the impression as if some significant news was forthcoming. We have to wait for SEC filing if indeed there was insider selling during the week commencing March 5th 2001. If that is the case, the hypothesis is partially supported. I am still short on Amazon.I did put a buy order to close my position, but, luckily I canceled just seconds before it would have been executed. Starting tomorrow Amazon will slide again. I agree with you that Bezo has caused so many lives ruined. Shame on Time magazine who chose Bezo as Man of the Year, as if there was no person better deserved that designation. But then again Ayatollah Khomeni was once Time's Man of the Year.
