I am careful when I agree to help some one to always qualify that with "as far as I am able" or unless some act of God interfers, or unless my ability to assist you changes, etc. etc. etc. I consider that the only responsible path to take. You make that sound cheap or selfish. Is that what you intended?

I didn't intend to make it sound cheap or selfish. I didn't intend it to sound anything. I was just illustrating how we all set different moral standards for ourselves. If you want a label, I guess I would say cautious or uncommitted. Or maybe lawyerish.

If I couldn't bring myself to take my neighbor's car to drive my friend to the interview, perhaps I would feel obligated to feed his family or pay his rent until another job opportunity came along. I knew he was counting on me, I knew that his situation was critical, I screwed up, and I need to do whatever I can to make it as right as I can. I cannot just tell him that the situation had changed and that he was SOL on the interview.

Maybe it's more about responsibility or compassion than it is about moral choice. These examples rarely end up illustrating what was intended. This discussion started with your your comment that Cosmic's situational ethics would require looking at each situation individually. My point was that each situation needs to be evaluated individually anyway, even if purpose is established in advance. Look where we ended up!
