It also occurs to me that this is a Dell configuration. So, an "L" may be an "L" on a Dell but something else on a Gateway or a Compaq. An MSFT Tech who tried to help suggested that it's not a retail version of W2K but a OEM version. So there may be subtle differences.

It most likely is the same across all platforms, but in case it does not work then the reason may be because it's a specific letter for the Dell version. A different letter for a Compaq and so on. Don't know why that is, perhaps to reduce portability to other manufacturers machines or software piracy.

Whatever, that's what works on this Dell.
