John - Okay, then I have another question. Re: You are aware of the AOL instant messaging software that let's you know when your friends are on the Internet? Same thing, only instead of just sending messages, you have file sharing. Yes, I'm aware of AOL instant messaging, but I don't use AOL. If you have "instant" file sharing, wouldn't this be a way for viruses to be spread, too? (I know, it's probably a dumb question, but I'm not a computer geek.) Betty

John, this is less a problem than you think. The recording industry has a big advantage over individuals who participate in illegal copying schemes for gain--deep pockets for financing lawsuits against those individuals. The recording industry is now armed with a legal decision that gives it the upper hand in any legal action. A software designer who sells software that would allow someone to make an illegal copy almost indistinguishable in quality from the original risks getting sued in the same way that gun manufacturers are being sued for making it too easy for their products to find their way into the hands of criminals. Really, if you just think about court costs these days, and the minimum it would take for someone to defend himself from a copyright infringement charge, the conclusion is obvious: This illegal copying scheme is just too damned expensive, potentially!
