I noticed samsung has a nice 17" flat pannel monitor for $1,500. These are finally starting to approach the consumer range.

I am just amazed at how behind the U.S. is with mobile communications (voice and data).

right you are, this is one of the biggest homerun Markets to come down the pipe in the next 2-3 years.
