Sorry if this is a bit offtopic...

Does anyone know much about MVNOs (mobile virtual network operators)? Ovum defines MVNOs as "A company which operates its own MSCs and has its own mobile network code, enabling it to issue its own SIM cards (not just rebrand an MNO’s SIM cards) and therefore entirely “own” the customer” however, it does not own the underlying mobile infrastructure (basestations and towers) nor does it own a wireless license. Therefore an MVNO leases capacity on a wireless operator's network.

Does anyone have information and/or first-hand experience on who the players are? What is the state of the industry? Are there standards in place for this operating model and the interaction with wireless operators? etc...

As an example, Virgin Mobile (as in Richard Branson's Virgin) is a very successful MVNO in the UK.

Thanks in advance,
Alex K.
