I don't buy the argument. At this point, overthrowing the Government would require nuclear, chemical or biological arms. If the government and the military were truly united in the attempt to implement an oppressive non democratic regime then private firearms would not easily overthrow such power, but it quite possible that there would not be such a consensus in the military. Even if private ownership of guns didn't overthrow such tyranny it would make it harder for it to consolidate power. Tim
