Competition Heats Up in Memory Microchip Market
March 7, 2001 (SEOUL) -- Global microchip giants are facing fierce competition ahead in the area of next-generation semiconductors such as Rambus DRAMs and DDR (double date rate) SDRAMs.

Intel Corp., which has more than a 50 percent share of the Rambus DRAM market, is confident about high-speed Rambus microchips.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Toshiba Corp., NEC Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. also make Rambus chips. However, AMD Corp. and Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. focus on DDR products, which are much less expensive than Rambus and boast interoperability.

DDR products, which are used in graphics of DDR products, are expected to be linked to CPUs in the fourth quarter of this year, which will result in challenges to the existing Rambus market.
