I would like to add that one should never forget India in the equation as the Balance of Power to China.

Personally, I think that India is the true sleeping giant of Asia.

But maybe I am biased since I am Indian <ggg>.

<However, I think it is entirely possible that Japan turns once again to the false god of militarism, as they have never lived down the war they started<

One supposes that anything is possible, scary thought for Asia given Japan's technological infrastructure. However, a VERY aged population. I don't know if I can pick out another country, in history, that became a militaristic power with such a small proportion of young people.

I think the key to Taiwan/China relations is some sort of fundamental change in Chinese government. Like everything else in Chinese history this will probably take a Loooooong time. But, when it happens I think Taiwan will be able to be folded into a "greater China". However, as long as the current system is in place I don't think the Taiwanese are going to "bow down" any time soon. Certainly, not while there are Republicans running the U.S. gov't. Republicans need a "boogey man" to fear and have nightmares about. Russia is too far gone for that, Saddam isn't big enough, Iran is useless, there's only China. As long as the Chinese have the kind of gov't system they have they will continue to be a solid candidate for "boogey man" designation.

Oh, one last thought on your comment about Japan never "living down" the war they started. They've never lived it down because they've never faced up to what they did. Americans think about WWII in terms of the U.S./Japan/Germany experience. But, the people who really understand what Japan was about in WWII were the Chinese, Koreans, Malaysians, Philippinos, Vietnamese, etc., who lived through their numerous invasions, occupations, etc.

That a nation could have committed the kind of acts that Japan did and yet take so little responsibility afterwards and have so little reflection on their conduct speaks volumes for the character of their culture. Its hard for any nation to do, but, that Japanese are pathetic about it.

Hi Jay,
'True, but never French Creole Trinidadian Chinese. We introspect quite well, especially while sitting under a thatch beach umbrella, lime in coconut juice drink in hand, girls at side, Cuban music
wafting through the air, chicken drumsticks cooking on the grill, knowing we are the best.'

Well I thought being a good looking, French Chinese Irish, was THE ultimate.. but alas my confidence is eroding :0) I imagine it's the fault of the climate though. We have little time for introspection as much energy is spent in the pursuit of exothermic endeavours up here in the frozen north.

'Looks like YHOO might choke on another bone.'
Oh YHOO will be fine... Aren't they going to improve shareholder value by doing a share buy back with all the cash they will have from 'breaking even' ROTFLMBO :0)

Got O&G, Cash, and a little gold and silver.

regards
Kastel
