Win, the UK's own former Bishop of Durham has similar views... basically interpreting the Bible (NT especially) as metaphysical rather than historical.
For example... news.bbc.co.uk

David Jenkins, then Bishop of Durham, hit the headlines for saying he did not believe in the physical resurrection of Christ, or the virgin birth.

Which is - or was - an unusual position for a CofE bishop... and he was actually accused of heresy for saying so.

I thought he was admirable for at least recognising that a 2000-year-old belief system might not be seen as believable in the scientific era...

The New Testament is the testimony of believing people, and what they are saying is not history but expressions of their belief in Jesus as Christ.
