it seems like you don't like the 1st generation of any CPU family, and with good reason, too:

That's actually a good generalization. In case of Athlon, if the only thing Athlon was competing with was P6 Katmai, the first version of Athlon might have been an exception. But Coppermine at the same clock speed as Athlon classic was a very good competitor.

I'm sure once you see future, more cost-effective versions of Pentium 4, you'll come to realize how brilliant the design really is. (And the AMDroids will still find a bone to pick.)

We will see what Intel can do about the P4 design, and where competition is at the time. BTW, companies future depends on the success of the people within Intel who are working on fixing P4. That's a tremendous pressure to have on your shoulders - half a trillion of market cap depends on them.
