These memories get summarized and symbolized. Did Achilles really exist or is "he" an amalgam of people, hopes, dreams and visions of a people? The individual's whose exploits are "remembered" become anonymous, but not their value system. It is like the cave paintings generating a memory of people who live ages ago. Have you ever put your hand in a petroglyph hand print? Very moving and affecting. Like a time machine, but the person at the other end is anonymous.
