I was telling people at work how in high school I'd done a photo shoot of cumulus clouds. People in my class said "Why did you take so many pictures of clouds."

Because they were beautiful.

If that doesn't ring true, then I couldn't explain it further. I enjoy the thoughtful posts here too, I must say.

Perhaps there is a schism - a very complete schism- between people who need absolute meaning and people who don't

You are correct, except I think that the need follows from the choice, although I recognize how very intertwined they are.

To allow any diminution of present meaning because of either doubts or certainty (gulp) about the future--well, this seems to me to be the ultimate in impracticality and self sabotage.

That was a sweet thing to say. I know that does not mean that you entirely or always agree with me--but that makes it even more meaningful to me. The experience is mutual...thanks.

I don't understand this "absolute meaning" statement. But I suspect it is because you are attributing something to a group of people that doesn't exist. I don't know anyone who doesn't derive meaning from their existence minute by minute. Who are these people you are referring to and are you sure you got that right?
