The role
does not seem incompatable with an environmentalists view of things

Brees, the role as you describe it, one of responsible steward of the earth, is not incompatible, but all religions and all strains of Christianity do not subscribe to this role. Some visualize a gentle, caring God and others a vengeful one. I think the Christianity can support or undo environmentalism depending on the teaching of the particular sect or congregation.
