Place your bets on oil patch consolidation
The Globe & Mail, March 7
Vox

The oil patch's weak are falling like leaves from a tree in autumn, and that's good news for those willing to bet on more consolidation. Every takeover shrinks the pool of possible targets, making them more valuable as the bigger, healthier players look to bulk up.

Those companies are coming off a very good year and are sounding very optimistic about 2001, so it's not hard to imagine that they'll be willing to open their bulging wallets to snap up smaller players. Among the better bets are Talisman, Gulf and Anderson, all of which have solid prospects even if they don't get bought.
