With four weeks to go in the traditional storage
withdrawal season, the historical low of 546 Bcf in
April 1996 will be tested unless the withdrawal pace
tapers off quickly. The American Gas Assn. reported
Wednesday that 73 Bcf of working gas -- along with
4 Bcf of producing region base gas -- was
withdrawn in the week ending March 2, lowering
working gas nationwide to 786 Bcf, or 23.9% of
capacity. The year-to-year deficit rose from 335
Bcf to 371 Bcf, while the deficit from the five-year
average climbed from 378 Bcf to 394 Bcf. AGA's
five-year average showed a withdrawal of 57 Bcf
and an average working-gas volume of 1.180 Tcf. In
the same week a year ago, 37 Bcf was withdrawn
to lower working gas to 1.157 Tcf, 36% of capacity.
Two years ago, 69 Bcf was withdrawn to lower
storage to 1.593 Tcf, 49% of capacity.

Three years ago, withdrawal of 47 Bcf reduced
storage volumes to 1.301 Tcf, 41% of capacity.
Four years ago, withdrawal of 76 Bcf dropped
storage to 988 Bcf, 31% of capacity. And five years
ago, withdrawal of 62 Bcf lowered storage to 858
Bcf, 27% of capacity. Working gas last week
dropped 6 Bcf in the producing region, to 236 Bcf
(372 Bcf a year ago), 54 Bcf in the consuming
region east, to 402 Bcf (527 Bcf a year ago), and
13 Bcf in the consuming region west, to 148 Bcf
(258 Bcf a year ago). Regionally, working-gas levels
as a percentage of full capacity were 24.8% in the
producing region (down from 25.4% the previous
week); 21.9% in the consuming region east (down
from 24.9%); and 29.2% in the consuming region
west (down from 31.8%).
