How the US took the world for a ride.

When the Cold War ended, there was a lot of technologies once privilege of the military that need to find civil use. California had seen the defence industry go down the drain. What was needed?

It was required a clear strategy of what to do with the spoils of Cold War's end. My wife sometimes get everything leftover in the refrigerator and get a nice dinner! Why not put to private use the network the military use? Good idea. Voila we have the Internet.

Does anyone remember the term 'peace dividend'?

The Telecom Act of 1996 was passed all the rage about virtual reality and multimedia was changed to the Internet. CLEC's started growing like weeds everywhere. Competition was the order of the day. And the cash started rolling in. (There was money for even ADSL!!!)

Northrop was not hot, but not to worry, every week an Indian engineer would come out with a new technology and VC were there to support. That was the age of the next. Next Cisco, next Microsoft, next Nokia and so on.

While working for an European telecom vendor I noticed they practicized a kind of voyeurism. They glanced longingly across the Atlantic to California. They have even a few established gurus. They would live in Silicon Valley and would get the spirit of the age by osmosis. Those evangelists would come to Stockholm and would report on what was going on in the New World. I would seat there watching (in disbelief) imagining a Columbus coming back from its voyage and reporting back to the Spanish court.

Defence technology for civil use was not confined to the US. Israel - which together with Egypt got the lyon's share of US aid for military purposes- became a hot bed for technology. Israel got tons of technology for military use.

Even the Russians wanted a piece of the action: "Russian defence firms look toward U.S. for help:

Well, next time I want some cash too! Having lived to a time in the seventies when the Queen of Holland was pedalling a bicycle. People told her during the Oil Shock that we had ran out of crude. Have seen the Xmas tree in from of the White House unlit to save oil because the world was going to run out of it, I now developed a radar to cash in the "next big thing". I really believe 3G is the future.
