Ed,

Re: Sell Ratings by Prudential

I'll just toss this out there for what it's worth. Pru has never been much of an investment banker, in fact not really a great broker, either, when you compare it with its competition. Lately I've seen commercials where they seem to be trying to position themselves as rigorous, tell the truth analysts. Maybe they've given up on the investment banking side of the business and are focusing on the brokerage side.

If you can sell yourself as a gutsy, truth telling entity not-beholden-to-the-investment-bank-side, then maybe you don't give a hoot anymore about using euphemisms such as "neutral" or "market underperform." Maybe you can win more clients by going out and just saying, "the banks suck, interest rate cuts aren't going to save them short to medium term, sell 'em and we'll tell you when to jump back in."

But I could be wrong, it's happened before.
